I was changing out my floor mats yesterday and I noticed a small compartment located under the front passenger side mat. Its about the size of a deck or cards and slides open. I noticed some numbers written on the inside of it but otherwise it's empty. Does it have a purpose other than a place to stash small items?

Besides the VIN number, I cant think of a reason to put it there. But why would they need another location for it besides under the windshield?

A buddy says VINs are now all over vehicles due to theft and chop shops, even being stamped into metal parts all around the vehicle. This makes it harder to re-title a stolen car.

I guess a little extra security never hurt anyone.

I'm a little worried about some of the laws written to address smuggling. When I installed a hitch I found these massive empty cavities under the interior panels behind the rear wheel wells, between those areas and this VIN insert area it would not be a stretch to conceal stuff or to be accused of it.

    Maybe I'm paranoid, I donno.

Oh I can't imagine the amount of empty unused space there is in a vehicle.

Just a heads up for anybody that was thinking of hiding anything in this little cubby, people have stashed things in there before and they slide around inside the vehicle and you may or may not be able to get them back out.
