Do you think it would be doable to remove the factory rails and get something 3rd party or DIY that sits way lower for mounting a roof top tent? They're about 12-13" tall when closed so if I could get back even 1-1.5" inches from the standard rail+cross bars setup I think it would be worth it. Curious if any of you have the rails apart enough to get a feeling for that. Tx!
For different reasons than yours I've been mulling the idea over of what it would take. First, the racks themselves are bolted on. The lowest-end Sport model is available without racks, and there's black plastic trim that replaces them. There are holes where the racks bolt down that are threaded. One could conceivably build something that entirely replaces them. What I'm probably going to do is to put a straight-edge across the racks and measure the height to the roof. The roof is not perfectly flat so knowing the distance from the roof to the plane across the racks will tell me if I can recover any of that space or not. If it's too close then no.
I have a sport model that didn't come with a roof rack, I added aftermarket thule podium feet, but you could very easily add something else. If you take off the rails there are actually 4 sets of mounting holes on each side of the roof. Jeep by Mojave posted Sep 15, 2016 at 8:14 PM
I read a review like that as well. However, I noticed a lady at the grocery store the other day getting out of her Toyota 4x4 and it had a Curt rack. I asked her whether she had any problems with rust and she said none. She's had it on for a few years, too. Seems like a decent rack if one doesn't wish to spend and arm and a leg.
^just make sure Amazon doesn't bend it in the shipping process and UPS doesn't either lol. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk
I like your rod setup, I am looking for a similar rig for my surf gear. Are the rod holders Yakima as well?
I purchased a set of the same knockoff cross bars on eBay and will plastidip as well. Did you use plastidip black or a different color?
The rod rack is made by a company called Fishing Innovations. I have been trying to get in touch with them but not having any luck. It is a great rack.
Hi Moises....I have the exact set up.....do you get a lot of wind noise. I have the mysky roof. I'm not sure if that contributes to the noise.
Did that this weekend! total investment was $50 and I'm pleased with the outcome! used black plastic-dip. Hoping to get picture tomorrow, but it getting dark at 4:45 doesn't help!
Don't have any plans to put something major on the roof, but really liked the look of cross bars. Got some off of Amazon for $40 and plasti-dipped them Black. I'm really digging the look! I plan on tinting my front sidemarkers black this week to complete the look.
