    ***UPDATE***

So, after I initially brought the DH into the dealership they started looking at it. Found the starter was shot, and a fuse (the big fuse thing on the battery) was blown. Took plugs out and saw water in the cylinders, at that point the insurance adjuster told them to stop everything until they get an appraiser out to look at it.

Four days later, the appraiser got out and looked at it and gave the OK to order a fuse and starter.

A week later, they got the parts order in. Found that the package had a headlight instead of a starter. My starter went to someone in Connecticut, and I had their headlight.

They finally got the starter in yesterday, took the tech a whole day to install it. I guess it requires removing the intake (or exhaust) manifold to have enough room.

Once they did that, they found that the motor is completely locked. I'm only upset because it took them about two weeks to find something out that could have been figured out by a mechanic with a brain and a wrench.

I'll let y'all know if insurance totals it or not. I'll also let you guys know how much the quote is for a new engine.

That's totaled man. Not coming back from a seized engine.

Yeah, we'll see. The only thing that could prevent it from being totaled is the fact it's only got 6,900 miles on it and it's a fully-loaded DH. Putting the value probably around 23-24k. If a new motor cost 15k to put in, insurance may still opt for that... But I'll be pushing for a total loss.

Tbh that motor shouldn't cost that much. I used to wood for Benz and specialized in sprinters. We used to get trucks with fucked up motor, dpf and cat because they'd put gas instead of diesel and it'd mess up everything. That Benz motor was $7500. (Reman) Or band new $12,000. Can't imagine a Chrysler engine would be anywhere close to 15k. But keep us posted

Yeah, I was exaggerating the cost.. was just making the point that it will take a lot of cost in repairs for them to total it.

When I first brought it in and expressed concerns about it being totaled, the service lady said she doubts they will total it even if it needs a new motor. She said a new motor would be around 5k probably, plus labor.

What's happening to mechanics around the world nower days when I was in motor trade .day one we would have dropped plugs out oil out to check sump wasn't full then see if motor would turn by hand at all then if it was knackered we would strip rebuild but now mechanics seam unable to do anything other than swap parts

    *UPDATE*

The estimate for a new motor came out to around $8k, with labor. I guess instead of letting the renny die they will be giving it a heart transplant.

So now I have the question... Is it worth keeping a water damaged vehicle until the end of it's life, or sell it as soon as possible? Obviously if I sell it as soon as possible, I'll take a big loss as it will be hard to sell with water damage in it's history. If I keep it long term, I have to be concerned about more going wrong with it.

I would love some honest, straight-forward opinions on that.

This is how I see it. Keep it. Anything goes wrong (hopefully not water related) its the dealer that last touched it.

    *UPDATE*

The dealership got the new motor in and finally started working on it. They said they emptied about a gallon and a half of water from the motor.

I had asked them to check other fluids - transmission, differential, transfer case... They said they looked "OK" and therefore insurance wouldn't pay for them to be flushed. I asked how much it would cost out of pocket, was told I'd get a call back.

Got the call back, and they said it would have costed $900 to flush the other fluids, but they called the insurance adjuster after they discovered all of the water in the motor, and got insurance to cover it.

Apparently it was $300 alone JUST for the transmission fluid.

Factory $ is worth less than customer $ hence over charging a customer three times the rate

Finally got my Jeep back last week...

The dealership installed the bottom radiator hose on backwards, causing the hose to fall off on the drive back home. Leaked all the coolant and overheated, and warped the head. So, FCA paid to ship my Jeep from where it broke down, back to my hometown where it had the second new motor installed.

Everything seems good now. Was a long 2 months without my renny, glad to have it back.

Right.. The dealership that installed the first replacement motor claimed they never touched that clamp. They explained they disconnected the hose on the side it attaches to the motor, and dropped the drive train out without needing to remove the clamp that failed. I smelt BS, as well as the other 2 dealerships that had looked at it. They fixed it under warranty though, so whatever.

I'm counting up every day this thing is in the dealership for warranty repair, and after a cumulative 30 days I'll be having the FCA buy it back under lemon law.

Good luck, because they've have screwed me royally. I already have a lemon law attorney looking at mine.....its either getting bought back or insurance is gonna declare it a total loss because FCA voided my entire warranty, even after a dealer repairs with one parts they won't reinstate it because they don't feel like it....dead serious.

Why did they void your warranties?

there's an alternative to snorkel you can DIY, I'm doing it anytime soon instead of installing a snorkel, take a look:

this is an adapted air intake from a Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero Full.. compared to the air intake on the renegades you can see the huge height difference.
