I have a 2015 Trailhawk with the 2.4 4 cylinder. I've been on quite a few adventures with my little toaster and for the most part have been pleased. My one beef I have is that in some instances it just seems that I run out of power. I know when off-roading there is a certain type of finesse that you need and one needs to know how to drive but sometimes you need just a little more oomph! that in some situations the Renegade just doesn't have. I've noticed in situations especially going up on an incline that the motor just bogs down and just peters out. Does anybody know of anyway to boost HP a bit (or a lot)? I have oversized tires (not by much-28.5 inch K02s) and I think you lose HP when running larger tires. Any ideas or info would be appreciated.
It It may be a couple other things that may help. A. Torque, not horsepower is what you need going up a hill. The 2.4 only puts out 175 foot pounds and that's max at 3900 RPMs. That's where you need to keep your revs to get the full pulling power. I'd love to see a torque and horsepower chart, but haven't found one. Those would show the curve you need to keep the revs at for power and economy. B. The traction control applies the brakes to counter wheel spin. I've found on icy/snowy roads I have to get into the pedal to get the powered wheels through the brake action. When I shut off the traction control altogether, I spin my wheels until the computer defuels the engine (or however the electronic throttle control does that). Probably not helping you go up a hill either. Hope that helps a little, even being no answer for more power.
I've had some luck with adding the go-pedal and Autoflash from Maddness auto. But it's a little pricy.
I haven't seen anyone who has tried the 2.4l Turbo kit for the BU, but it says 295HP / 285Lbs Torque. There are a couple threads on this forum alone of people asking if anyone has tried it, but no one has been brave enough. https://roadracemotorsports.com/sto...ucts_id=2508&zenid=eluj62s3c664r6l9j97us5u8a0
I have not gotten a chance to try my Trailhawk in snow yet but purchased it to help me get up my road in snow which is about a 35 degree incline topping out in a curve . Do you think low lock would keep the rpms up enough to solve this problem ?
We still have a lot of snow a few miles up the road on the offroad trails. I hit them the other night and didn't even need snow mode until I had to turn around as we inclined and the snow was too deep (frozen, crunchy iced snow where bottoming out would be like being stuck on dried clay) I didn't want to brave it and go farther with the stock setup, but even when I turned around in some pretty deep stuff it was no problem. A couple weeks a ago we went up there and the snow was even deeper so we hit a side road that was pretty steep, but decently traveled enough so the 3 foot blanket was down to about 6 to 8" on the tracks. Snow mode climbed that hill with ease. We did a power U turn at the top with no issues and declined back down no problem. I was pretty impressed, but could tell it wanted better tires.
Thanks for the information. I was starting to worry that I may have bought something that wasn’t capable of what I needed it for but where I live it’s very rare to get over 6in. of snow and the incline is the thing that I was worried about . If yours can do that I think I should be fine !
The only time I have ever needed low lock was when either I was stuck or I was pulling out a stuck vehicle. Generally because I'm only going under 10mph or so. If I can go faster, I just use low. The Renegade in Snow mode should work for you fine.
Quick fix is to use low range aka 4WD low. It uses gear reduction to supply more power. Long term fix is to replace the dif gear set to compensate for the change in tire size.
