So you got a snorkel... what about the transmission vent??

I finally got around to installing my snorkel. For me, it's kind of a "just in case" mod as I don't really intend to go trudging along in deep water. Not unless I can get this bit figured out:

Has anybody actually relocated/extended the vent tube for the transmission (and I assume differentials)?

I've seen videos of folks going through pretty deep water with a snorkel, but I have yet to find anything about the vent tubes. Isn't this a valid concern??

I've done some googling, but have yet to find a decent diagram showing the locations of the vents.

Seems like it would be a simple peace-of-mind mod.

 

Good point.
The rear diff does have a vent hose and is on the inside of the left rear fender liner.
The Transmission and Rear Differential vents should be relocated if you added a snorkel, or you are just going to fill the transmission and rear diff with water.
... especially important with our "Filled for Life" transmission.

Edit 2: nevermind on that second link. Searching other forums seem to indicate they're only for dedicated trail rigs.

 

I have lots of rain and snow going on at the moment. When I get a chance (it might be a week), I will crawl under the Jeep and get some pictures.

 

I plan on getting a snorkel but it is to get up out of the dust out on the trail.

 

perhaps you could just be the first in line? save a lot of head aches there.. The topic in this thread is exactly why I’m hesitant on the addition. would be great piece of mind knowing the intake is higher than in the engine compartment but with those breathers down below... I mean, this tranny. all sorts of “c’mon really?”s going on. would love to see the pictures of the so called-vents. leaves my head all itchy

 

The transaxle vent tube is no higher then the top of the transaxle.
If you were to look between the engine and the battery, under the battery tray, you will/can see the transaxle vent tube.

If anyone figures out a good way to raise these, I'd be interested.

 

I am going to remove the vent cap from the transaxle vent hose. Add a hose connector, and extend the length of the hose to the air box.
Drill a hole in the air box, add a grommet to the air box, add another hose connector to the end of the extended transaxle vent hose and plug it into the grommet.
That will seal the transaxle vent to the height of the snorkel.

For the rear differential. The vent tube runs up behind the left rear fender liner. Add a hose connector to the vent tube and extend the hose up to the inside of the left rear quarter panel, in the hatch jam... so-to-speak (see attached pics).

I haven't done these yet, they are on my 'To-Do' list lol

 

Any read to be concerned about the intake pulling a vacuum in the transmission?

 

As long as we are not plugging into a vacuum port, there shouldn't be enough of a vacuum for concern.
