I was vacuuming my driver side foot area today and noticed for the first time the exposed metal steering arm/knuckle right behind the gas pedal. Is it not supposed to be covered up with anything? Mine is developing some bright orange rust spots, and ideas on whether I should treat it with anything or just leave it as is? Should it be completely exposed?

It's surface rust and iirc, it being exposed is normal. I got look in a moment.

Anyhow, the rust is fine either way. They all do that and it doesn't hurt them.

I figured the rust wasn't critical, it just looks kinda tacky inside the cabin (even if normally invisible). It wouldn't have taken much to give the raw metal a light oil, or something.
