Jeep employs wizards at the factory that cast a special spells on the windshield to detect water. Lol I have no clue how it works, but it's awesome.

I have rain sensing on my mini(remmy is a 2015 so none for her) It's ran by a button on the wiper stalk, and it has a sensor in the top of the windshield (probably why a new windshield costs 2000$) It's pretty cool but don't depend on it. Jaime tends to forget to wipe the windshield in heavy rain...

I drove a rental Limited for 10 days and was surprised when it started to sprinkle lightly and the wipers came on. The windshield was just about to the point where I was going to turn them on, then voila! It's a nice feature.

Have there been problems with it?

I thought that the wipers had to be set to one of the delay settings on the wiper control lever.

To activate the rain sensing feature:
Turn the rotary knob until the number(s) "1" or "2" line up with the small white line.

The Rain sensor has two settings:
The first setting ("1") is somewhat sensitive. The wipers might come on in a light mist.
The second ("2") is very sensitive. The wipers will come on in a light mist.

Once a sensitivity setting is selected you can leave it on all the time.

Also in the manual explains the rain sensor only works after you gave a command in the stalk for safety reasons. So if it is on and you turn off your car, next engine start even if it is on it will work only after the first manual wipe command. I guess this prevents the wipers from working accidentally if you are cleaning or working in the front.

There is a sensor mounted on the inside surface of the windshield that emits IR light that reflects off the outside surface of the glass back to an IR sensor, When the outer surface of the windshield is cluttered with droplets or ice crystals, the reflection is reduced and the IR sensor output voltage is reduced. When the voltage drops below the sensitivity setting, a swipe of the wipers is triggered. The speed sensor may contribute to the trigger frequency. Mine will not swipe until I begin moving after engine start. The movement requirement may prevent damage due to ice still holding the wipers, since it is likely the driver will clear the ice before moving. The cold weather group also includes an electric front lower windshield defroster that activates at low temperatures. The wipers do not operate with remote start.
