Tire Sizes for 18" Factory Wheels with 1.5" Lift and 1" wheel spacers - Will 30" Tires Fit?

Hi folks!

I've got a 2016 75th Anniversary Renegade that has 18" factory wheels, and I'm having the 1.5" Daystar lift and 1.25" Rugged Ridge wheel spacers installed next week. I'm still trying to find out what size tire I can fit, though, and I'm having trouble finding folks with 18" factory wheels that have shared their experience with tire sizes after a lift.

I emailed Daystar and they said they recommended 235/65/r18 tires, which are 30", however I haven't run across anyone with anything much bigger than 29" without having to cut anything off. I'd love to get the biggest tires I can, but I also want don't want to have to cut anything off, or lose all of my articulation off road. I'm wondering if I should go with 235/60/r18 instead to be safe.

Anyway, I'd love to know what size tires worked for anyone with 18" wheels and a 1.5" lift with or without wheels spacers!

 

I would say the 235/60r18 is much more likely to work with your spacers on then the 65 aspect ratio, but even that is iffy, the spacers increase the arc of the tire, and a 29" like the 60 aspect ratio will frequently rub on the pinch seam in that particular scenario...

I'd be 98% certain the 235/65r18 is gonna rub even without spacers.

In all cases though, your subject to the vagaries of tire sizes by manufacturer, so it will also depend on the brand of tire and the backspacing of the rim you use to, were you planning on using stock rims?

 

Yeah, stock 18” 75th anniversary wheels. The Daystar folk said the 235/65/r18 tires would work with .25” - .75” wheel spacers, but 1” and 1.25” wheel spacers were the only sizes I could find.

I did find a couple examples of folks with Altitude trims putting 29” tires on their stock 18” wheels with no lift or spacers, and they fit with no rubbing or very limited rubbing, but I hear what you’re saying about the spacers increasing the arc. If there is pinch seam rub, is that just when you turn the wheel? Can you drive home with that issue and find a shop to do the pinch seam mod afterwards?

 

Yeah, you can drive it that way, it generally only rubs at close to lock, You'll see rub marks on the inner fender liner, and it will quickly rub through the liner and you'll start see a shallow cut through the tread of the tire. You definitely want to trim the Pinch Seam before to long if you're going to keep it that way...

 

The really thin wheel spacers are usually just plates of steel, you can pick up universal ones at most autoparts stores... Like these;

Personally I'd never trust those, and you need to get longer lug studs if you use them too...

Right on. Thanks for the replies, Zuke and Justin! So as an update, I got the Daystar lift and 1.25" wheel spacers installed. I'd asked the mechanic to do pinch seam mod, but when I picked it up he told me he didn't do it because he didn't think I needed it. So I went to try out the 235/65/r18 tires at the tire shop because they had those in stock, and as expected it bumps up against the wheel well pretty badly at around 1/2 of a wheel turn (I think). It really wasn't that much of a turn before it hit.

So I just dropped it off at the 4-wheel shop for the pinch seam mod, but I realized today that I have a black metal plate covering the pinch seam on the driver's side wheel well. I looked it up and found a couple people mention this. I guess 2016 and later Renegades have that plate on the driver's side, and at some point they even added it to the passenger side, too. I saw someone with a 2020 Trailhawk mention that they had those on both.

So at least a couple places I found this mentioned, people said they just removed it and didn't worry about it, which is essentially what I asked the 4-wheel shop mechanic to do when I just dropped it off. Does anyone else know anything about these plates, or have you removed them?

This guy mentions something about adding a piece of steel to push the plate back, but I don't really understand what he's saying there. Maybe someone else does!

 

Hmm, I didn't have any plate in my 2017 trailhawk, so I'm not sure what they are like, and yeah, I have no idea what he means in that video!
