Turbo kit for 2.4L Renegades!

    Does anyone know if FCA has ever used a turbocharger on this design 2.4L, if so I would be less wary. I wouldn't risk it, but I have no need for speed with my Renegade, I bought it for the MPG and mild off road capabilities..... and I love the look!

    I like the idea of turbo charging the Renegade, the problem is, the “Renegade Turbo System” is no longer available.

    I did talk to Rob at Road Race Motorsports; he told me that he isn’t selling enough of them per month to continue making them. However, Rob did say that he had a few components that he would sell.


    Kit 1: Exhaust Manifold, Turbocharger and Downpipe (the Manifold and Downpipe are Renegade specific, hard parts to come up with for our Renegades).

    Kit 2: Piggyback ECU; Renegade specific.

    Kit 3: Inner cooler. As I am told, the mounting hardware is Renegade specific (I probably could have save a couple hundred dollars if I had built my own mounting hardware).


    I really wanted it, so I bought the three kits. These three kits do not make up the whole, there is still going to be a lot of fabrication on my part.

    What really is kicking my butt is, when he was selling the “Renegade Turbo System”, it was going for $4499.00 as an install and drive kit. I spent $200.00 more than that and still need $1000.00 in parts (Waist Gate, Blow-off Valve, Piping, and who knows what else).

    …not to mention the $550.00 in shipping.

    lol, I hope when it finally shows up that it is the most beautiful Turbocharge kit out there.

    If playing with cars wasn’t a hobby, I definitely wouldn’t have spent the money.

    I like the idea of Turbocharging. Turbo engine aren’t any worse on gas mileage then a naturally aspirated engine, unless you keep your foot in it. No additional wear-and-tear, unless you keep your foot in it.

    I would like to be able to pass somebody in my Renegade with confidence.

    Having a little extra power on the trails is never a bad thing.


    The 2.4L Tigershark I4 was built with turbo and Supercharging applications in mind.

    They have a really good head, pistons, rods, forged crank, a strong block with reinforced cylinder walls. We have a good reliable engine in our Renegade with its 2.4L Tigershark engine.


    The 9 speed transmission (ZF 9HP) is a solid component. It is the same exact transmission found in (to name a few):

    Acura TLX (206HP) and MDX (290HP)

    Honda Avancier/UR-V Turbo (190HP)

    Honda Accord (252HP)

    Civic Type-R (315HP)

    Range Rover Evoque (237HP)

    Land Rover Discovery Sport (240HP)

    Jaguar E-Pace (296HP)

    With the only real differences being in the transmissions tune of the automaker.

    Seems maybe now with the new Turbo engine in the trailhawk the aftermarket will unlock more power soon. I think my Renegade would be about perfect if it had another 50HP. But I know that willnever happen with my 2.4L.

    Let me know how this end up. I am kinda sad too. I was hoping to get the Turbo 2.4 kit in a couple years. One reason I jumped and got the 2018 TH when I learned the 2.4 non-turbo option was going away in 2019.

    I have long been contemplating turbocharging my Renegade... I'm probably in way over my head. Like you said, RRM doesn't make a kit specifically for Renegades anymore.

    However, they sell do one for the Dodge Dart, which is also uses a 2.4L Tigershark engine. It is also priced at $4499, lacking the same components you described for the Renegade kit...

    Supposedly, these kits are the same. RRM says the Dart kit will fit my Renegade. (Apparently they have done it before, but with how much improvisation, I don't know...) I'm a little wary, since I am not familiar with the differences between the Renegade and the Dart.

    In your experience turbocharging a Renegade, what advice do you have to offer?

    I am firstly concerned with things like mounting and clearance... wouldn't want to buy the kit only to find out it won't fit my car!

    Aside from that, I am thinking about other components that are not included in the kit (waist gate, blow-off valve, might want to upgrade fuel pump, injectors, spark plugs...) and what all you bought and installed separately.

    Lastly, the description doesn't specify whether the intercooler is air-to-air or air-to-water. If oil cooling is involved, then that's another huge road block for me, because I can't drill a hole in the oil pan without removing it. I would really need to take the engine out, and I don't have the skills or hoisting machinery to do all of that. I am wondering how yours is configured for cooling.

    The Dart kit is the same with the exception of the inner cooler piping (the piping required to run to and from the turbo innercooler) and the stand-alone/piggy-back Fuel & Ignition Controller (the controllers are vehicle specific). I "had" to buy their recommended piggy-back for the Renegade, which has always had an issue with idling. I am going to replace the Fuel & Ignition Controller with the AEM 30-1910 6 Cylinder Fuel & Ignition Controller this summer.

    The kit (The Dart kit) comes with top a the line waist gate and blow-off valve. The kit also comes with a set of good spark plus and an additional fuel injector. The stock fuel pump doesn't have any problems keeping up with my needs.

    The innercooler is air-to-air and DOES NOT fit if you install a winch. The winch plate is in the way. It might not fit the Trailhawk's because of the lower bumper location (height and angle for the improved approach angle).
    I am not currently running with an innercooler. I am going to try and make something work this summer. Possibly something along the lines of a Subaru style innercooler.

    IF I was going to do it again, I would go with the Dart kit and try and save $1k+ (RoadRace sells their fuel controller for $1600.00) by asking them not to include their piggy-back Fuel & Ignition Controller and just go with a AEM Controller.

    The engine oil pan can be removed from the Renegade without taking out the engine (can be seen here).

    Another issue is. The 9 speed automatic transmission for naturally aspirated engines like to shift, underload at about 6500 RPMs. If you are under boost, the shift must be completed by 5500 RPMs or the OEM ECM with cut fuel until the engine is allowed to return to idle. This sucks if you are trying to play a little bit.
    The newer Cherokee's come with the 2.0 turbo. Their 9 speed transmission's are calibrated to shit at 5500 RPM. Not because the engine can't run to 6500, but because the transmission doesn't want to shift at those engine speeds.

    The Renegade is a beast @ 8 psi. It will smoke the tires at will, even in 4WD. The hard part is trying to keep the RPMs below 6000 RPMs and preventing fuel cut-off.
    @ 6 psi it will still easily spin the tires, feels like what you would expect out of a performance Renegade (if Jeep would build an SRT4 Renegade).
    @ 4 psi it still spins the tires, has power to run up grades, pass with confidence, even with all of the weight that I added. This is how I believe a Renegade should run.
    Who knows, I might put the 6 pound spring back in it and take it to the track (1/4 mile) just to measure improvement numbers.
    @ 6 psi, I am at approximately 200 Wheel Horse Power (HP).
    @ 4 psi, I am at approximately 180 Wheel HP (perfect for daily driving).

    Keep in mind, our 180 HP 2.4 is only making 139 HP at the wheels (approximate).

    I really hope that Jeep comes out with the 2.0 turbo in a Renegade. It would be so much more fun to drive.
