I'm looking for some reasonably priced options for a roof rack. Anyone have any luck finding some strong enough to support gear? Some of these look pretty sketchy. I'd like to be able to get a full rack up top at some point.

Me too, let us know what you find. lol
I love looking on Amazon, but I hate that I can't go 'Hands-On' to check quality and feel.
Usually, I like to shop around at offroad shops to see it first hand and then check Amazon for a better price. ;)
I just haven't done it yet.

So I was buying up some deals during Cyber Monday for my daughter and decided to pull the trigger on some cross bars and a roof rack for myself! Here is what I have coming:

I'll update when I get them in. Might not actually install anything until Spring. No sense in throwing them on to collect snow and dirt all Winter.

I, for one, would like to see what it looks like installed.
Please keep us updated (pics, pics, pics).

I figure we will get the pictures sooner rather than later. He seems a like he is ready to get things on there. ;)

I'll be putting the rack together in my basement and sealing all the connection points. So I'll have pictures of that off the Jeep for sure. Maybe I'll get ambitious enough to test fit it all when it's ready to go. You know how these things go, gotta at least have a good look at it on the Jeep.

SMART! The absolute best way to keep it from rusting from the inside out. Makes the rack stronger when it is sealed also, less flex at the joints.

Also thinking about adding this on the wind deflector.

Nice graphic. what color is the Renny? I'd color match the Mountains to it if possible.

It's Commando Green. I'm going to get a can of color matching paint for the mountains and a medium toned red for the taillight outline.

The rack came in this morning. I'm not thrilled with the quality of the packaging. Lots of dents and dings. If I'm going to keep it I'll have to scuff the whole thing up and give it multiple coats of paint. There's also rust along the weld seam of the upper rear tube and in one of the corners near a weld point. I'm on the fence here. This wasn't an expensive rack, won't cost an arm and a leg to fix up. The hardware was busted open and loose in the box. What you see for foam is all that there was to protect the parts. Guess this will just turn into a little more work than I had hoped for.

I left feedback with pictures and sent comments directly to the seller. We'll see if I get any kind of reply.

The seller is giving me a full refund and told me to keep the rack. So I guess I'll use that money to refinish it.

Checking a few local places to see what it would cost to have it blasted and powder coated. Might as well do it right if I'm going to do it. Maybe even try to color match the powder coat to the Commando Green of the Jeep.

I have searched a lot on this also. I have the Brightlines cross rails and swear by them particularly considering the price of 99 bucks delivered from Amazon. They are very nice, do not whistle and are easy to put on, like five minutes. In terms of roof racks, your best deal for a good unit at a good price that can be extended or retracted lengthwise is probably the Curt. There are generic ones that work fine like the harbor Freight and many others that look like they are made by the same manufacturer. There is one called Tyger that is good looking not a bad price. This is all on Amazon.

I've also gone the route of a roof cargo box. I ended up with a Thule Force XL "Sport." It is eleven square feet and is the PERFECT length fitting almost exactly across the top of the Renegade. These are NOT inexpensive, but I finally just did it. It works great on the Brightlines cross rails. I can't say enough good about them. AND since the Thule is a "narrow" one, I can get Rhino Rack ski carriers (13 inches wide) on also for my cross country skis. I can get one carry on size bag into the Thule, two soft bags, two pairs of boots, two sets of snow shoes and four sets of ski/hiking poles into the Thule. Without the snow stuff, could get all of two peoples baggage up there I'm thinking and odds and ends.

I shopped Yakima and Thule cross rails, pillars etc. Frankly those set ups will cost you 350 to 440 to put on vs the Brightlines and all you will have is the "name" on them. I did find out that Amazon has their European Amazon versions available for less than half the American versions of Thule roof systems (not cargo boxes) so go look at that. You do pay shipping from Europe, but you save a bunch...if you want to go with Thule pillars and cross bars.
