I finally got some of the part I ordered in, AVID Radius PreRunner front bumper, AVID Radius rear bumper with tire carrier, AVID 2.5 inch lift (I specified the CNC’d Billet 7050 T74) and the ATP Lift Springs.

Bilstien B6 struts and a Warn Winch VR8-S

… lol; there is nothing more exciting than a garage full of parts just waiting to be installed.

The first thing I did was strip it down; Front Bumper, Rear Bumpers and finder liners (if the Rocky-Road Outfitter’s Rock Sliders had come in, I would have removed the rocker panels also).

Knocked out the Pinch Weld modification for larger tires (to come), treated the area with spray-on bed liner and covered that with VHT High temp paint (probably a little over kill).

    upload_2019-7-25_4-5-44.png

Then I went with the Front Bumper with winch and the Front half of the Lift kit.

    Continued…

I made some modifications to the lower grill for access to the Winch Clutch.

    upload_2019-7-25_4-14-20.png

Using the recess in the bumper, I notched the lower grill so that I would have access to the clutch lever.
I separated the grill from the grill support so that I was only making modifications to the support.
I used a 4.5" hole saw and a drill press to make my cut.

I continued with the Rear Lift then finished up with the Rear Bumper.
… it's funny, the closer you get to finishing, the fewer pictures get taken.

Reinstalled the ATP Carrier Bearing Skid Plate, ATP Differential Skid Plate and the MagnaFlow Cat-Back exhaust.

    Off to the Alignment shop...
    Everything aligned to specification.

I want to make a few adjustments/modifications. I don't like how far the license plate sets off of the spare tire. I need to wire up the license plate light; mount and Hi-Lift Jack; move the Back-up Camera.

Future upgrades: AVID Snorkel; Rocky-Road Outfitter’s Kicker Rock Sliders; and a Turbo (if I can find some place to mount the inner cooler); Roof Rack; Lights (Roof Bar, Ditch Light, Back Lights...).

Nice! Thanks for the photos as well. I like seeing the BU stripped down like that.

I ended up fitting a 235/75 R16 in the spare tire compartment. I just have to keep the jack/tire iron kit out of that space now, but the other Styrofoam spacer/compartment piece still fits. Just don't put the drive side back seat down, or it won't go back up because it catches on the rubber of the spare. I had to pull the spare up a second to get the seat back up (I didn't try a crow/pry bar/screw driver to guide the seat back up and under the top of the tire, but that could also maybe work. Other than that it fits with the cover down so the trunk is useable.

Just curious, why the bilstein b6 struts and any reason for the ATP springs over the eibach?

Pretty amazing build. I'm interested to see where the backup camera will end up.

Blistein B6 has always been my strut upgrade of choice. As long as I was changing the springs, why not replace the struts.

I ordered the ATP 4.0 lift kit; three and a half months later when I ordered my bumpers from AVID, their 2.5" lift kit looked really nice, so I ordered one of those too. The ATP kit arrived about the same time that the AVID stuff did.

I liked how the AVID kit looked over the ATP it. That's why the AVID lift with ATP springs.
The AVID kit offsets the top of the struts (from and rear) to help maintain proper strut angles. It also cam with strut adjusting bolts to aid in alignment (rear raised control arm perch, and adjustable rear control arms for adjusting the rear toe/camber).

This might not be the Ideal location for the camera. The camera is calibrated for use above the license plate, so the view is a little off. but it is usable, and it works. There just aren’t too many places for it to be mounted.

Maybe the tire carrier would have been a better choice, but I didn’t want to mount the camera in the swing arm.

I really wasn't going to install the snorkel. But, AVID offered it for free as a July 4th promotion when you bought one of their bumpers.

    It wasn’t hard at all.

I rolled the jeep onto four (4) ramps to get it off the ground (if you only have two ramps, do one side at a time).

I Removed the original rocker covers.

I used a step bit for the 9/16 holes across the top for the inserts (these holes drill very easily), shot it with a touch of paint (rust prevention). If you put a bolt a few turns into the insert before installing them; by pushing on the head of the bolt it will stretch the insert a bit and make them a lot easier to install.

I hooked the lower edge of the rock sliders on the four (4) tabs that attached the original rocker panel under the jeep, lifted the slider up and started the bolts in the inserts (finger tight). Once the bolts were started, I centered the slider and snugged the bolts.

I used two (2) vice grips to clamp the lower edge of the slider to the pinch weld and place a jack under the rock slider (I placed a 4X6 between the jack and the slider for weight distribution (I placed the jack in the center, lower edge of the slider)) and raise the jeep a couple inches to get (without lifting the jeep off the ramps) a good tight fit on the pinch weld.

¼ inch bit, using the holes in the slider as a guide I drilled the holes. I ended up using four (4) drill bits, rotated them out and sharpened them a few times. That pinch weld is hard.

I was using gloves when I drilled the holes. I am glad I did, because when the drill pulled through the pinch weld it racked my hands against the frame. The gloves saved me.

Once all the ¼ inch holes were drilled, I removed the slider and shot the holes with a touch of paint. Allow the paint to dry for a few minutes and reinstall the slider. Start ALL of the bolts before tightening any of them. The inserts are rubber, so the bolts going into them should only be slightly better than snug. The ¼ inch bolt along the bottom should be tight.

    …repeat on the other side.

Without assistance, I was able to get the slider installed in a couple hours. Drilling the pinch weld and allowing the paint to dry took up most of my time. I wasn’t in a rush.

A couple tip and then some…

The winch clutch access modification after the grill was reinstalled. It turned out nice, and I have access to the clutch lever.

For those of you that installed a lift kit that included new rear control arm mounts that lowered the rear control arm… lol

Noises, I didn’t have any, but here is what I noticed and took care of before my initial drive.

I know that some shops won’t pay attention to or just may have overlooked in these areas.

The rear fuel tank skid plates:

The right (passenger side) fuel tank skid plate was touching the new control arm mount and required me to notch out the skid plate for clearance of the new mount.

    20190723_081945 - web.png

    20190723_104347 - web.png

The rear of the right skid plate was touching the rear differential dampener. I just cut off the portion of the skid plate that was interfering with the dampener.

    20190723_081956 - web.png

    20190723_104336 - web.png

On the left fuel tank skid plate. Clearancing was required for the new control arm mount also.

    20190723_082406 - web.png

The exhaust pipe was touching the carrier bearing skid plate (I have MagnaFlow Cat-Back exhaust on my jeep, so this might not apply to all, but still might be something to look at). I was able to loosen the exhaust clamps, push the exhaust pipe against the floor of the jeep and retighten the clamps. When the exhaust settled, everything had enough clearance.
