So, my Apply Carplay connection cut out mysteriously while on a 1 hour drive. After rebooting phone, I decided to reboot the car. I was rolling down a large hill, no cars around, so I put in the clutch and keyed off. No big deal right?? Then a horrendous gear-on-gear sound came from the front of the vehicle. I quickly restarted and the Service 4WD light came on. Did they really design the differential so it has to be powered whenever the car is in motion??? Who would do that? I was able to pull over and cycle the 4WD through settings and the Service 4WD light went off. Did I do serious damage? This car doesn't have 2000 miles on it yet. I can't find anything about this online. No idea why it won't tether to the iPhone anymore either but that's the least of my concerns.
I may or may not have tried the same thing (restarting the car while in motion) but had the car in neutral with the clutch out. There was no loud grinding noise but I did get the same "Service 4WD" light. A power cycle (once I stopped) cleared it as well. From what I can figure, there is a "4wd actuator motor" at the front and a "rear diff. motor" at the rear that work in unison to connect and dis-connect the center drive shaft. On startup, the computer "tests" both these motors to confirm timing or alignment and what not. Doing so in motion proves to be problematic for the system. What you heard was the front motor trying the engage the center driveshaft and the gears not aligning. I would say just make sure the 4wd still engages and spins all the wheels and hope for the best. The moral of the story is don't restart a renegade while rolling down the road. This may sound obvious to most people, but I can assure you, starting a car with a manual transmission is no big deal even while up to speed. I used to have a car that would stall when I was coming down exit ramps. Had to restart it all the time while moving. I would also hyper-mile my last car and turn the car off on long hills to save gas. Never was a problem. The Apple Carplay stuff, I have no idea.
you might want to take it to the dealer you bought it from, manual Renegades like to auto apply the parking brake when turned off. The grinding could have been the parking brake trying to apply
Yeah, I plan to talk to a dealer about it. I'm doubtful it was the brakes - the electronic brake is meant to serve BOTH as a parking brake and emergency brake. If that was the case, it should have smoothly brought me to a stop. I didn't feel any braking and it was clearly a gear on gear grind.
When 4wd is engaged and power is removed the system puts it back into 2wd. Try it put it in 4wd, turn off the vehicle and if will be in 2wd. Same with the auto, mud, snow. Turn off the vehicle and it goes back to auto.
