I tow 2 Hobie kayaks with a 5x8' trailer on a regular basis. I would guess the weight to be somewhere around 1100. ImageUploadedByToasterJeep1469445625.719537.jpg ImageUploadedByToasterJeep1469445647.864309.jpg

She do good? Ill be going with a single Dirt bike set up ,either. Open or enclosed? I've been putting my boat in last couple of days , just in the neighborhood and its great. Hardly any squat from the tounque weight. Lots of noise transfer from the hitch I noticed

Don't even realize the trailer is there unless going up a big hill. Gas drops about 1.5/2 mpg. But over all very pleased with the results!!

I know this thread has kinda dead, but can I get someone to clarify something.

So I know it has a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds. And a tongue weight of 200 pounds.
When factoring in all the items weight. Should I include what is inside the cab? i.e. People, luggage, fluids, etc.
or is that 2000 pound rating solely for what is BEHIND the vehicle.

What you can tow is based on total weight of vehicle/cargo and trailer. If you have a 1500 lb trailer add it to the curb weight of your vehicle plus payload(people/cargo). If it is more than your gcwr (gross combined weight rating) regardless if it's less than a 2000lb trailer , it's too much. Don't exceed that value.

The combined weight rating is your vehicle gross weight rating - tongue weight + 2000 lbs for 4x4/2.4 US models. The 2000 lbs towed is extra weight beyond the gross. The vehicle gross includes the wet weight (with fluids/fuel), all the payload (tongue weight is payload) - which should not be exceeded.

The gross weight of the fwd models is about 4197 lbs. Both the fwd sport and the fwd latitude curb weight is 3044 lbs. The limited's equipment reduces the payload by about 140 lbs with a total curb weight of 3187. Curb weight includes all the fluids and a full tank of fuel. The payload is 1157 pounds for the fwd sport and fwd latitude.

The 4x4 models have a gross of 4405, that's an additional 208 pounds of weight the 4x4 can support. The sport and the latitude curb weight is 3183 lbs while the trailhawk curb weight is 3573, an added 390 pounds. That 390 pounds results in the 832 lbs payload of the trailhawk. The 4x4 sport and latitude payload is 1222 lbs.

Towing 2000 gross pounds is a feature of the 4x4 with 2.4 gas and 9-speed auto for a total combined gross of 6405 lbs. Jeep terms and conditions state "To determine the maximum trailer tongue weight, multiply the gross trailer weight (GTW) by 15 percent."The gross trailer weight for 4x4 renegades is 2000 lbs, so the tongue max is 300 lbs. The tongue weight counts as payload so that leaves 532 lbs for trailhawk passengers and gear or 922 lbs for the limited 4x4 remaining payload at max tongue weight. The sport is disqualified from towing, possibly because of the smaller 1.4 engine and manual transmission, e.g. potential clutch failure? Ref: "http://www.jeep.com/hostc/towing/basics/terms.do

The ratio of trailer weight to gross is 2000/4508 = 44% a conservative number. In Europe the towing limit is 3300 lbs (69%) for the 4x4 with 2.0 diesel (with trailer brakes) and 2000 lbs for the 1.4 gas regardless of transmission (so not the clutch; e.g. training and permitting). The renegade brakes are the same worldwide, so the difference is likely engine torque and regulations. In New Zealand the trailhawk towing limit is reduced by 300 Kg. In Australia the towing limit is 907 Kg with trailer brakes and 400 Kg unbraked. In the UK the noseweight is limited to 132 lbs for the trailhawk. So it could be worse.
