My husband and I are looking for a bike rack for our '16 trailhawk. Any suggestions??!!

Do you have a hitch or not?

We actually put the hitch on to our Renegade in part so that the bike rack would fit. It's one of these:

Sorry, I don't have a picture of it installed. We haven't actually used it on the Renegade in the year that we've had the vehicle, so I can't comment on practical use. It does hinge downward, but I don't know if it'll clear the hatch or not when loaded with bikes.

 

yes we have a hitch. i think i would prefer one like this. i really like the stability factor for both tires.

That was my reasoning when I bought it too, I didn't want to hang the bikes from a trunk lid (I was driving a Dodge Stratus at the time) and I didn't want to put something on the roof that I would forget was there and wreck the bikes pulling into a garage.

The Bell bike carrier is definitely on the low-end as far as quality goes, but it's also a hell of a lot cheaper to buy than the Thule equivalent, which starts over $300 and depending on options easily crosses $500. We used our Bell unit with that Stratus on a road-trip to San Diego to let us ride around Coronado for a few days, and since that Stratus was fairly low the bikes were directly in the wind. The carrier did not appear to suffer any.

If the goal is to go four-wheeling a lot with the bikes in-tow then perhaps you'd want to step up to a better one, like one with a native 2" receiver instead of this one that is native 1.25" and uses adapter plates to go to 2".

 

ooh i'll have to check on that. i do like the option to go off roading with the bikes in tow.

If you do, don't forget to evaluate the loss of departure angle (ie, dragging the bike rack on the terrain) and the reduced overhead or side clearance to trees and other obstructions. It would suck to rip the bike rack apart on the trail and now not only have a broken bike rack but no good way to get the bikes out either.

1up USA. I've only had the chance to use it once, but man is it quality. Pricey, but worth it in my opinion. I don't off-road, and I definitely wouldn't with the under bumper hitch I have.

Not to intentionally detract from LimitlessADV's offer, but wanted to show some pictures of the Bell that I'm accustomed to.









The Bell sticks out from the back of the vehicle approximately 25.5" or 65mm, and is approximately 25" or 63mm from the ground at the back.



It technically does impinge on departure angle. There's probably a 3" gap between bumper cover and the straight-edge running from the rear tire to the bike rack. But, at over 2' off of the ground this really shouldn't cause too much trouble for light offroading. Heavy stuff would obviously be another matter.

 

No worries, not trying to hijack the thread, just throwing it out since there were detailed questions.

By the way, nice how that hitch rack you have mounts so high so your not dragging it on the ground all the time.
