Those with mods; How much did you mileage change?

    So I'm going to be taking my Jeep to the dealership pretty soon to discuss my drastic loss of fuel efficiency. My last couple tanks of gas have averaged in the low 16 mpg range (16.8 and 15.5 hand calculated). When I first got it, I was getting 20-23 mpg average combined. When I was on the highway I even saw it jump up to 32 mpg when I reset it just prior to hitting the onramp, but now the highest I've seen in similar conditions is around 22. I think it started after I went to the dealership last time. At first they claimed there were no software updates, but when I pressed them on it they checked again. I missed a call from the service manager after that and wasn't able to get back in touch with him, and I'm assuming he was going to tell me that they were able to find some updates. I also noticed that my gearing seems MUCH different. In automatic, it's getting into 8th gear as low as 40mph and 9th gear around 45-50.

    I know they'll probably feed me a line about my roof rack and light bar reducing efficiency, and while it's a valif point, I really don't think it should be so drastic. Hell, my friend's Commander is getting 16, and another friend's fairly built up Wrangler is getting 17. I'd like to go in with some ammunition so I know what others are getting. If you guys could list what model of Renegade you have, what your average MPG is, and what modifications you have, and if possible the mpg change you saw from mods, I'd really appreciate it!

    I get 18 to 22, 15 Th. I have a roof rack that's pretty bulky but I don't drive hwy too much.

    My 2.4 auto won't get into 8th until 60 and 9th is 73. Your shift pattern is really out of the ordinary. I do have a fishing rack on Yakima round bars with a Yakima fairing. I can't say I noticed any difference in mileage with it but it is not bulky. My overall mileage is around 29 mpg. I have gotten as high as 33 on a trip and around 24 on strictly stop and go.

    I have the Sport 1.4L turbo 4x4 manual with a K&N Filter, cut down intake box (cheapo short ram!), a GFB DV+, a roof rack from Yakima that i McGyvered on (no standard roof rack). There is a homemade cargo rack that goes on and off depending on what I am carrying around. Combined mileage: 28 mpg. I have a 120 mile round trip daily commute and about 30% of that is in heavy stop and go traffic.

    *edit* i almost forgot, a resonator back 2.5" exhaust going into a 4" Magnaflow muffler.

    I have a 16 4x4 limited 2.4 pzev and run into this problem as well. I usually see 16-22 mpg avg 18.2 since I bought it in december. I just assumed it's been because of the hilly nature of the area I live in. The renegade seems to hate hills. The only mod I've done is an angry eye light cover which made no difference...

    I know this is an old topic but it's only now that I have a good feel for my jeep now that I already have over 3,500 miles . When I bought mine and reached the end of my break-in (about 1,000 miles) I had 25 MPG on the highway and worse in town.

    They flushed the system and it improved to 29 MPG highway @ 65-70 MPH. In town is 27 MPG @30-45 MPH. I also have a roof basket but is positioned all the way in the back.

    What do you mean by "flushed the system"? Fluids, the electronics reset, other?

    Flushed the Module Systems... I did not ask for it, they did it when I went for my turbo oil leak dripping.

    I wonder if this is any different that disconnecting the battery for a bit. I have read elsewhere that people are starting to do that to improve the transmission.

    MDReed, I asked them about exactly that and they said it (module flushing) means re-programming not just a reset.

    Caught my attention originally from Num10k topic... that is a big concern to me because he hits 9th gear at 45 MPH. My 6th gear at 45 MPH will stress the engine, it vibrates. Now for those of you who is not a "stick-shift" gearhead, you might think this it is not a problem - well, it is a problem for small engines. And if you drive stick a lot, you know what that means. So 9th gear at 45 MPH, the engine is so stressed... it should be at least in the 5th to 6th at 45 MPH. Now if you have a 4.0L that is geared differently.

    Yeah, lugging a small engine like that can drastically increase the chances of pre-ignition, especially with turbocharged engines. That causes all sorts if expensive damage to the internals of the engine.
