Hello fellow BU owners. I recently purchased a TH without a tow hitch. I plan on putting one on in the near future but I realized that my rear bumper does not have the opening that exposes the hitch. If and when I put on the hitch, would I need to 'cut' out the hole myself? Anyone else go through this already?
I was looking into this for a while. The renegade ready hitch is basically an OEM hitch. With that, you have to remove the bumper cover and cut a hole in it. I have heard great things about that, and the instructions are supposedly extremely clear. I don't feel comfortable doing that yet, so I'm going to get one of the draw-tite under bumper ones for a bike rack.
Yeas you have to cut the hole into it. I bought from renegade ready and the template they provided was perfect. Not bad to install just take your time.
Thank you so much. I didn't even know about the renegade ready site! I checked it out and know exactly what to expect! Thanks again!
Thank you so much. Like I told "Jack D" I didn't even know about the renegade ready site. After looking at both options and seeing your pics, I will go for the original design tow hitch. It looks like a lot of work, but given that you said that the template was perfect, I'm going with this. Thanks again for the help AND PICS!!
To Jeep-N I had a question on your installation of the tow hitch. Is it necessary to disassemble everything that you did (the rear tail lights & rear wheels) in order to install the tow Hitch? Thanks
Yes. You have to disassemble all of it. Lol. It looks like more work than it is though. The whole job took about 3 1/2 hrs. Instructions were on point, but you have to start at the bottom and take all of it off to be able to access the screws for the next step.
Make sure you purchase the wiring harness that renegade ready sells. It wires right into the relay at the back of the jeep. The hitch comes with the pigtail but you will still need the harness too.
Great. I'm going to have to take your word for it and hope that it isn't as complicated as it looks. Thanks for the heads up. If anything else comes to kind, please let me know. Have a great weekend!
Not a problem. Let me know how it goes bud. Also keep in mind, if you have any questions don't hesitate to call them. They were able to help me on a Sunday even though they were closed. You'll do fine!!
Hi again. So I'm finally deciding on doing this hitch make-over. I actually found a cheaper hitch set up on Amazon but it lacks the instructions (and I am someone who needs idiot instructions). Would you know if the instructions for the Renegade Ready hitch are also available online? Thank you for your help!
Something to bear in mind with the RR kit, it's more than just the hitch. It includes the bezel that needs to be installed into the rear bumper cover, the bolts that retain the hitch into the structure of the body, the clips that break when removing the plastic wheel opening molding trim and have to be replaced, and the template for cutting the hole in the rear bumper cover in order to install the bezel. Even discounting the directions that they had to write, there's a lot more to the kit than just a hitch, and having done the install myself I'm glad that I had all of the accessories that go with it.
